About the same time on that Monday morning, Private Investigators Nick and Shelley Cooper were just unlocking their office door and getting ready to start their week. Nick was the fifth generation of Coopers to operate their investigations from this same office. The two of them rode to work in separate cars in the event that one of them might be called away on a case, leaving the other free.

“Anything going this morning, Nick?” Shelley asked.

“Oh, that’s right,” Nick replied. “You weren’t here when I closed up on Friday. I have to drive to Pasadena this morning to interview a potential client about a case. Looks like you’re on your own for a while.”

“When do you think you’ll be back?”

“Depends,” Nick said. “If it turns out to be a case I can start on right away, I may not be back for a while. I’ll call you either way when the interview’s done.”

“Duly noted,” Shelley said and finished hanging up her jacket and purse before taking a seat behind her desk. “What time do you have to meet your client?”

“Eleven o’clock, so I should leave here around ten-fifteen or so in case traffic gets too heavy.”

Shelley nodded. “Doesn’t sound like you’ll be back in time for lunch. I think I’ll give your aunt a call and see if she’s free.”

“I’m sure Olivia would like that,” Nick said. “It’s got to be hard to enjoy any kind of a lunch hanging around the morgue. Say hi to her for me, will ya?”

“Will do.”
